The Plasma Cannon is much stronger than the Laser Turret, but it also costs noticeably more and needs hydrogen as well. It is unlocked by an upgraded Defense Station, a Research Center and further levels of Energy Concentration. It pays off once your planet starts drawing larger fleets.
